The Nehru Trophy Boat Race named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is conducted on the Punnamda Lake, near Alappuzha, on the second Saturday of August every year. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race, the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad for watching it. For the people of each village in Kuttanad, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come

  Krishnapuram Palace

The epoch-making Krishnapuram Palace which was built in the 18th century during the reign of Marthanda Varma is 47 km from Alleppey. The palace renowned for its Kerala architecture and murals preserve the ‘Gajendra Moksham’, the largest mural in Kerala. Apart from this, there is a museum for antique sculptures, paintings and bronze articles.

The highly acclaimed sweet milk porridge, 'Palpayasam' is the daily offering of this temple. And 'Ambalapuzha palpayasam' is the most delicious savour in its class. The illustrious temple is also significant for its paintings of the Dasavatharam and Kerala architecture. The world famous poet Kunchan Nambiar perfected and performed, ‘Ottanthullal’, a satirical art for the first time in the premises of this temple.

The black granite idol of Lord Buddha which dates back to 9th or 10th century is the only monument of Lord Buddha in Alleppey. The name karumadikuttan is derived from the native lingo 'Karuppu', meaning black.

In 1946, Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, the Diwan of Travancore, proposed constitutional reforms which the communists opposed saying its for the creation of an "American model" of Executive in Travancore. The Communists opposed this move with the slogan "American Modal Arabi Kadalil" (chuck the American model into the Arabian sea). The region around Alleppey was a Communist stronghold and the communist workers organised a mass upheaval in October 1946 against the authority of the Diwan
